We get confused about how we are supposed to live our lives as Christians, as Christian men in particular. It may seem that to seek to gain power, influence, and wealth are at odds with our religion. After all, Jesus said

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt 6:19-21).

Did He mean that to save money or accumulate cultural power is a useless exercise in "the love of money," and therefore an evil thing?

Or is Jesus' focus more narrow, on the idolatry of wealth? The rest of Scripture speaks positively of those who pass on an inheritance to their descendants.

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children,
but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous (Prov 13:22).
